Cane River Murals by Martin Ellerby
Posted by Doyle Bailey for Tour Natchitoches with Barbara
The World Premier Performance of “Cane River Murals” by Martin Ellerby from Northern England, was performed April 17, 2011 at the 100th. Anniversary Concert of the Northwestern State Band, Natchitoches, Louisiana.
The work is based on the African House Murals by Clementine Hunter at Melrose Plantation.
Ellerby writes of his work:
“These pieces are not intended to be musical representations of the murals but reactions to them: more reflection on the images spiritually”.
It is the idea of the Cane River that binds the five separate movements together. They are as follows:
- Spring Planting (Spiritual)
- Wash Day (Scherzo)
- Baptism, Wedding, & Funeral (Triptych)
- Honky Tonk (Blues)
- Pecan Harvest (Celebration)
